Sheki Summer Palace Guide
Sheki Summer Palace: A Jewel of Azerbaijani Architecture Guide
Welcome to the Sheki Summer Palace, a stunning example of 18th-century Azerbaijani architecture nestled in the picturesque city of Sheki. This exquisite palace, once a summer residence for the Sheki Khans, is renowned for its intricate mosaics, vibrant stained glass, and delicate frescoes. Prepare to be transported back in time as you explore this architectural masterpiece, a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Azerbaijan. The Sheki Summer Palace was constructed in 1797 by Muhammed Hasan Khan. Unlike many palaces built for defense, this palace was designed purely for pleasure and leisure. It served as a summer retreat for the Khan and his family, a place to escape the heat and enjoy the beauty of the surrounding landscape. The palace's construction reflects a blend of Azerbaijani, Persian, and Ottoman architectural styles, showcasing the region's diverse cultural influences. The most striking features are the "shebeke" windows, intricate wooden lattices filled with colored glass, assembled without glue or nails. Visitors can explore the palace's six rooms, each adorned with unique frescoes depicting scenes of battles, hunting expeditions, and mythical creatures. Take your time to admire the intricate details of the shebeke windows, which cast colorful patterns of light throughout the palace. The surrounding gardens offer a tranquil escape, perfect for a leisurely stroll. Don't miss the opportunity to learn about the history of the Sheki Khanate and the craftsmanship that went into creating this architectural gem. Sheki is also known for its delicious cuisine, particularly "piti," a hearty lamb and vegetable stew cooked in individual clay pots. Be sure to try it at a local restaurant for an authentic culinary experience.
